A Look at Toyota & Scion Logos

There was a recent article on Toyota’s corporate blog providing the meaning behind the Toyota logo. In the spirit of their explanation, we think you’d be interested in some information about the Scion logo as well…

The current Toyota Mark consists of three ovals: the two perpendicular center ovals represent a relationship of mutual trust between the customer and Toyota. These ovals combine to symbolize the letter “T” for Toyota. The space in the background implies a global expansion of Toyota’s technology and unlimited potential for the future.

The logo was designed and created by the company Freshmachine (defunct) founded by Wyndham Chow and Rick Bulton.

“Scion” means descendant of, and shows Scion’s clear heritage and connection to Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc.

The pronunciation is “cy-on”; like “Sci” in Science with “on” at the end; “sigh” with “on”.

The word scion derives from Old French cion, of Germanic origin.

According to a Scion Marketing Manager, there is no deeper meaning behind the Scion logo. Similar to the Lexus “L” logo, the Scion logo contains a stylized “S” …sorry to disappoint, but it has now been confirmed that there is no greater mystery.

  1. As the Creative Director on the SCION logo, I can tell you that the stylized “S” does contain meaning. The S is meant to relate to the constant swimming of a shark. Ever on the move. Since the brand took shape in California, it was important to represent the connection to extreme sports and the ocean. The shape also speaks to a road on the horizon. The logo is meant to create movement, dynamism and a bit of danger. -Wyndham
