Toyota’s FT-86 concept, which will be officially unveiled at next week’s Tokyo Motor Show, combines attractive, aggressive aesthetics, rear-wheel drive and a Subaru-sourced boxer engine with the hopes of injecting a bit of passion into the Japanese automaker’s admittedly sterile lineup. And since the vehicle has reportedly been a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru all along, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the Subaru-branded coupe that is sure to follow.

Last week, we gave you an update regarding Subaru’s progress with its half of the Toyobaru project, complete with a sketch-tastic rendering from the UK’s Autocar. Fast forward to today, and although we can’t be sure if this Nürburgring-circling, cobbled-together prototype is a Subaru effort or a Toyota joint, it appears to be a development of the FT-86 that we know is headed for production.

As shot here by our friends at KGP Photography, the little coupe is well disguised, but it looks like a Fuji Heavy project to us, as it shares some Subaru design hallmarks. Up front, the masked prototype takes on the basic shape of the WRX, with bold, bulging curves and a snub nose. There is no trademark Subaru hood scoop, but the big hood has a very aggressive appearance. Out back, the car’s rump is also Impreza hatch-like, with a massive rear wing disguised by some heavy camo. It isn’t at all clear that what’s seen here is in any way, shape or form production bodywork, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Scooby crew adopt a chunkier aesthetic than their compatriots at Toyota.

The basic layout of the vehicle also appears to favor motivation via the rear wheels, as the 2+2 cabin is pushed back over the rear axle. The Subaru will likely sport the same direct injection 2.0-liter boxer engine currently sitting under the hood of the Toyota concept. If the little boxer can indeed produce nearly 200 horsepower as has been rumored, we’re thinking it will be solid punch for the Subaru, as the Toyota FT-86 is nearly a foot shorter than an Impreza and the spy photos show what appears to be a very small form factor. Add turbocharging down the line and we suspect you’ve got a tuner’s delight capable of taking on the big boys.

Word on the street is that Subaru isn’t quite sold on the idea of the Toyota-designed rear-wheel drive platform, which may or may not be able to accommodate Subaru’s signature all-wheel drive setup. We’re not sure that theory makes much sense if the two are collaborating on concept versions of the vehicle, and it would be difficult to understand how Subaru could enter such an agreement without first knowing whether it could add its trademark drivetrain, but we’ve heard this word ourselves from Subie folks as well, so perhaps Toyota is throwing some of its weight around.

Today comes word from L’Automobile in France that not only is the rear-wheel-drive Toyubaru going to happen, but it will arrive bearing the Celica name sometime in 2010. If Wikipedia is to be believed, this would be the eighth generation of the Celica, which traces its roots all the way back to 1970 when it debuted in Japan as an inexpensive rear-wheel-drive sports car. Through the years it switched to front- and all-wheel drive, with the final seventh generation Celica sold from 2000 – 2005 being a strict cart puller. L’Automobile claims that Thierry Dombreval, Toyota’s VP of sales and marketing in France, spilled the beans on reviving the Celica name, so we won’t consider this news solid until a second source comes forward or Toyota officially confirms it, neither of which is likely to happen. So for now all you Celica fans should just sit tight and light a few candles for your cause.

No related posts.

The next President of Toyota Motor Co. Akio Toyoda gives us a little more insight into the Toyota/Subaru compact FR sports car.

In a press interview at the Tokyo Auto Salon last month, the next President of Toyota Motor Co. Akio Toyoda was asked many questions about where Toyota was heading and also one question which might be of particular interest to Japanese sports car enthusiasts, “How’s the development coming along regarding the sports car jointly developed with Subaru?” This question was answered in 3 parts:

Project Moving Ahead

Despite some reports to the contrary, the Toyota/Subaru compact FR sports car was not cancelled (even partially) and will continue to go ahead. It is seen as a vital part of Toyota’s “rejuvenation” efforts and reflects the company’s desire to develop a car that appeals to the younger generation of car enthusiasts. Having a FR sports car at the entry level end of the market is Toyota’s way of cementing its image as an rejuvenated car company and will surely dominate the segment as its competitors struggle to keep up.

Codename: “086A”, Delayed Production

Development of the body and chassis is complete and we’re told the development code for the new FR sports car is “086A”. The numerals “86? should make fans of the now legendary AE86 Sprinter Trueno/Corolla Levin happy as it’s rumored that the numbers will be carried over as the chassis designation. It was thought that the freeze put on construction of the new Subaru factory slated to produce the Toyota/Subaru sports car was the main reason for delays in production, but this is actually in no way related and the real reason for the delay is that production will postponed for several months so that D-4S direct injection could be applied to the flat-4 boxer engine. Production will be postponed until March 2012.

Price Unchanged

Akio Toyoda also confirmed that the price of the Toyota/Subaru compact sports car is still 2,000,000 yen and that there will be no changes to the original plan to build an affordable entry-level sports car. The car is seen to be a formidable model when it joins Toyota’s line up as it will surely push the boundaries of a market segment occupied by front wheel drive compact cars.

The Big 3 Detroit carmakers have been capturing the world’s headlines with their economic and product woes for the past several weeks, but the truth of the situation is that the whole industry is struggling. On the heels of the forecast of its first operating loss in 71 years, Toyota has also decided to push back development on its RWD sports car joint project with Subaru.

Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, has been working with Toyota on the development of a new RWD sports car for about a year now, but the continuing soft market and poor 2009 outlook have led the companies to shelve work on the car. Saving production costs in a cash-strapped market is part of the reasoning, but also introducing a new car right now would almost certainly doom it to sales failure, according to Japan’s Nikkei.

But the Toyota-Subaru joint project isn’t alone. All new production projects are being reviewed in an effort to help realign investment and development budgets with newly reduced profit forecasts. Last month the Japanese carmaker cut its future profit figures by 56% thanks primarily to poor sales in Europe and the U.S.

The much-anticipated RWD sports car hasn’t been canceled altogether, however – at least not yet. It is still scheduled to begin production, but not until 2012 of later. Plans had previously put the car’s launch in late 2011, branded as a Scion in the U.S.

Carscoop is reporting that Toyota has finally confirmed what many have long suspected: The next Scion tC will be a variant of the upcoming Subaru-Toyota rear-wheel-drive coupe project. At a press conference back in April, Toyota CEO Katsuaki Watanabe had confirmed that his company was jointly developing a pair of rear-wheel-drive sports cars with Subaru. Each brand would get its own version of the car, which would each be powered by one of Subaru’s boxer engines.

It looks like that powerplant will be around 2.0L in size and put out around 200 horsepower. Based on an all-new RWD platform, the affordable coupe should show up Stateside by the end of 2010, or possibly early 2011. That new tC will probably be joined by a version of the iQ minicar in Scion dealerships as well, also according to Carscoop‘s Toyota insiders. A reborn, rebadged Celica and a Smart-fighter could be a compelling pair for Toyota’s youth brand. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
