Carscoop is reporting that Toyota has finally confirmed what many have long suspected: The next Scion tC will be a variant of the upcoming Subaru-Toyota rear-wheel-drive coupe project. At a press conference back in April, Toyota CEO Katsuaki Watanabe had confirmed that his company was jointly developing a pair of rear-wheel-drive sports cars with Subaru. Each brand would get its own version of the car, which would each be powered by one of Subaru’s boxer engines.

It looks like that powerplant will be around 2.0L in size and put out around 200 horsepower. Based on an all-new RWD platform, the affordable coupe should show up Stateside by the end of 2010, or possibly early 2011. That new tC will probably be joined by a version of the iQ minicar in Scion dealerships as well, also according to Carscoop‘s Toyota insiders. A reborn, rebadged Celica and a Smart-fighter could be a compelling pair for Toyota’s youth brand. As always, we’ll keep you posted.

What It Is: The new Scion tC is an attractive sport coupe with an impressive price tag. The 3-door liftback I drove came with some add-ons, but was still remarkably low in price, without lacking any conveniences. It can seat up to five and the rear seats fold down to allow for extra cargo space when needed.

Under the hood: A 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder, 161 horsepower engine is standard on all tCs. You can get a 4-speed automatic or keep the standard 5-speed manual with overdrive. I found the car surprisingly peppy.
Cup holders: Two in the front center console and two side cup holders for rear passengers.

Upside: Well, I really found numerous upsides to this car. It is attractive, sporty, fun and comfortable to drive. And let’s not forget the easy-to-swallow sticker price. Scions target the late teen to early 30s group, although they seem to appeal to a broad range of drivers. The tC comes standard with a panoramic moonroof, sport front bucket seats with adjustable headrests, driver’s seat adjustments for height and seat bottom angles, a 160-watt Pioneer AM/FM CD system with seven speakers and a 35-watt subwoofer, iPod connector and auxiliary audio jack, power windows and door locks, auto-off headlamps, cruise control and more. Did I mention it was fun?

Downside: The acceleration was a little jumpy, but that was not a problem. For me, the only downside was that I’m pretty sure my daughter had tears in her eyes when I told her that we couldn’t keep it.

Mileage: 21 city and 29 highway miles per gallon.

Government Safety Ratings: Not yet rated by the NHTSA.

Cost: $17,800 for the base automatic, with a total price of 21,445 with the added all-weather carpet mats, rear spoiler lip, security system, and navigation system with tilt-out CD and DVD access.

Chris Rado and WORLD Racing made their way to Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) – a track unfamiliar to the team – this past weekend for NASA Time Trials. PIR is a short, very tight track; the kind of track that is an enemy to the WORLD Racing FWD Scion tC. “This isn’t the type of track that our Scion tC is designed for,” says Chris. “But when it comes down to racing, we race what we got and we run the tracks that we are there to race.”

The event at PIR had a great turnout of drivers, fans, and media. There were about 50 cars in the Time Trials category and over 250 cars racing overall. Chris and the rest of the WORLD Racing team felt it to be a very promising weekend.

The first session Saturday morning was a light session for Chris since he wasn’t familiar with the track and didn’t yet know his turning points, braking zones, and shift points. Chris brought the Scion tC back to the WORLD Racing pit early because he sensed there were some problems with the vehicle and didn’t want to chance it.

Due to some issues with the radiator and head gasket, the team decided to replace the engine. The spare engine they had in their possession was not quite in tip-top shape, so the team definitely had their work cut out for them. They needed to start by sourcing a head gasket and a radiator. Thanks to a local Scion dealership, the WORLD Racing team was able to check a head gasket off the list. UMS Tuning in Mesa, Arizona came in with flying colors and found the team two Mishimoto high-performance Scion tC radiators. Things were looking up for the WORLD Racing team.

The team worked for a solid eight hours and by 7 o’clock Saturday night, they had a running car with a brand new radiator and an engine in place that had raced at over five events, but with the new head gasket, everything seemed to be in working order. The team was ready to race on Sunday morning.

Sunday morning came and the WORLD Racing team was very excited to get back on the track and put down a good time. On the first session, Chris managed to clock a 1:05.94, claiming the new track record for a FWD vehicle which was only 0.4 seconds off the TTR overall track record held by Pete Creek and his fire-breathing Z06 Corvette. This was also the second overall best time in the Unlimited Time Trials class. Chris made it around the course eight more times, all of which he clocked times ranging in the 1:06’s. Chris was very happy with his driving and the handling of the Scion tC, especially taking into account how tight the course was.

For the second time trials session, Chris was gridded behind the track veteran in the Z06 Corvette who was known for taking the top honors repeatedly at PIR. Due to some technical issues with the car, Chris was unable to beat his time from the earlier session, but he still managed to run low 1:06’s.

Overall, Chris and the WORLD Racing team considered the weekend a major success. Especially since they had received top honors in the FWD and a second place finish overall in the Unlimited Time Trials category, which included AWD and RWD competitors as well. The team walked away from the track victorious with a new FWD track record and just shy of the overall track record for the Unlimited Time Trial race group.

Next up on the WORLD Racing nationwide takeover, NASA Time Trials at Buttonwillow Raceway October 11-12 where the team hopes to continue their great season with another victory!

No related posts.

We live in an extra-special world: When you want something special, it usually costs extra.

Want onion rings instead of french fries with that bacon cheeseburger? No problem, says the waitress. That will be an extra $1.79.

Of course this refrigerator is available in several colors, including titanium and platinum, says the salesman. And those colors only cost an extra $150.

Yes, you can get tile instead of vinyl on the foyer floor of your new home, says the builder. And it’s only $1,000 extra. Did I mention we’d also be happy to upgrade all the carpeting and padding for $3,000.

And cars? Forget it. If you’ve ever shopped for a new one, there’s a good chance you’ve left the showroom wondering if you get anything other than an engine and four wheels for the advertised price.

That’s why it’s so refreshing to test a vehicle such as the Scion tC. With a starting price of $17,000, the Scion isn’t incredibly inexpensive. But it’s definitely affordable, even in these tough economic times.

And considering all it has going for it — and all the extras included in its base price — the tC quite simply ranks as a bargain.

You don’t have to be young or thrifty to appreciate a vehicle like the tC. Like reggae or gospel music, it’s not for everyone, but the tC will be music to the ears of fans of small, sporty coupes.

One of the first things they’re likely to notice is how much the Scion tC delivers for the money. It begins with a stylish exterior accented by alloy wheels, chrome-tipped exhaust, clear taillights and headlamps with projector beams — all standard.

The tC’s interior is equally impressive. It features brushed aluminum accents, a “waterfall” center console stack, and a panoramic moonroof with a separate fixed glass panel over the passenger compartment

The tC cabin also has the feel, fit and finish you might expect of a car that claims Lexus as its cousin — but generally not one that costs $17,000.

When they see the tC’s equipment list, that price may look like a typo to consumers who have grown accustomed to paying extra for almost everything. The list includes everything mentioned plus antilock disc brakes, Z-rated tires, a 160-watt stereo with 35-watt subwoofer, iPod interface, remote keyless entry, A/C, cruise control, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, outside temperature gauge, and power windows and door mirrors.

Even a cargo cover, driver knee airbag and door mirror-mounted auxiliary turn signals are included in the base price.

So is a 161 horsepower engine that gives the tC a lot more grunt than most inexpensive cars. The engine, which delivers 20 city and 27 highway miles per gallon when coupled with a five-speed manual, is as responsive as a well-trained guard dog. It delivers punch off the line and good highway passing and hill-climbing power.

Although the engine had an inherently high fun quotient, a noisy muffler and touchy clutch made it difficult to enjoy. The TRD Sport muffler was a $525 option, and I can’t believe anyone over 18 would pay to be annoyed by its constant growl.

I also find it hard to believe that the tC comes from the factory with such a difficult to modulate clutch. I’ve never tested any Toyota product as challenging to launch smoothly. Since the test car had around 13,000 miles on it and was ready to be retired from service, I suspect the clutch was abused by other auto writers — many of whom I would sooner let perform brain surgery on me than drive my own manual-equipped car.

A five-speed automatic is one of the few “extras” many buyers will feel compelled to add to a standard Scion tC, and its $800 price is fair. With it or without, given the way it performs and all of its standard features, the Scion tC’s price is more than fair. It’s extra special.

Chris Rado and the rest of the WORLD Racing team arrived at the gate of Summit Point Raceway bright and early Saturday morning for Redline Time Attack, ready to get on the Shenandoah track and earn their fifth consecutive time attack win. The team unloaded the WORLD Racing Scion tC and prepped it for the first practice session of the day. Chris and the team remembered this same event last year at Summit Point, where they unfortunately didn’t get a chance to lay down a good number due to some technical failures; so this year, they wanted to make sure nothing got in their way of victory.

The Shenandoah course is very tight forcing the driver to mainly stay in second and third gears. There are only a few spots on the course where the driver would ever need to be in forth gear. And just like the short, tight course at Nashville Speedway, this course was going to be a challenge for the high horse-powered Scion tC coming out of the turns with limited traction. Chris also needed to overcome some braking issues which forced him to focus less on line and driving technique, and more on how to brake going around the course. Not to mention, on the last lap of the practice session after a hop on the track, the transmission exploded. You could say that things were not looking at their brightest for Chris and the team. But even with all these issues, Chris was able to pull out a 1.38.8 on the first session, the second fastest time of the day.

The WORLD Racing team got the Scion tC back into the paddock and prepared to change the transmission. Quick as always, the team pushed to get the car all back together in one piece. But they still managed to just barely miss the final call for the last practice session of the day because they were still working on the car. But with what had happened earlier in the first session and since the track was so ruthless, Chris and the team thought that perhaps it wasn’t a bad idea to wait until the next day to get back on the track and really make it count in the actual time attack session. So with this decision in place, they spent the rest of Saturday night making sure the tC would be perfect for the first time attack session Sunday morning.

Sunday morning Chris got out on the track in the first session and ran 1.36.2, a good improvement over his time the day before. This time was enough for WORLD Racing to grab the Unlimited FWD 1st place spot. The closest competitor was almost three seconds behind this time. This time was also the record fastest time for a FWD vehicle at Summit Point’s Shenandoah circuit. Chris and the WORLD Racing team were very pleased with the weekend and with their results. WORLD Racing walked away from West Virginia with their fifth consecutive win of the 2008 season.

Next up on the exciting WORLD Racing schedule, Chris and the team will be at Pocono North Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, September 6-7th for Super Street Super Lap Battle where they hope to round up their sixth consecutive win! Stay tuned!

No related posts.

Chris Rado and the rest of the WORLD Racing team made their way to Road Atlanta for the Super Street Super Lap Battle and the NASA Hot’lanta Nationals, the biggest NASA southeast event of the year. At this huge event, there was about a combined 450 cars racing at the track – everything from Porsche Cup cars to Corvette Cup cars, full chassis lolas and radicals to sport compacts like Subaru’s, Hondas, and the of course, the deadly and feared WORLD Racing Scion tC.

WORLD Racing was very excited to get back to the Road Atlanta track, considering that they already held a record for FWD best lap time at this venue. After coming off three straight wins, and making improvements in the tC at every event, Chris and the team knew that they would be on fire in Hot’lanta.

In the first session on Saturday, the WORLD Racing team decided to take it easy by going out on the track to warm-up and make sure everything was working properly. Chris ran a 1:34.6, which was almost a second and a half faster than their current track record at Road Atlanta. Not a bad way to start the event!

Chris was very excited about this record breaking time, especially since he hadn’t even really pushed the Scion tC yet. This time was also a full five seconds faster than the record time for any Super Street Super Lap Battle competitor at Road Atlanta. The only car faster than Chris on this first lap was Ed White in his Porsche GT3 who ran a 1:32.89

By the time round two came around, the WORLD Racing team had made some tweaks to improve their time. And you know that’s exactly what they did! Ed White was right on the money again with another 1:32 lap time, but Chris bested him with a time of 1:31.92. Not to mention WORLD Racing had also improved their past time by over three seconds.

After accomplishing his first goal, Chris now had his sights set on beating the Porsche Cup car that had run a 1:31.59 in the second session. Chris was ecstatic that he was only three-tenths of a second behind this half-a-million dollar Cup car. He had left everyone at the track amazed and scratching their heads that he had just ran such an incredible time in a four-cylinder tC with a stock transmission and many other stock components.

Towards the end of the second session, Chris caught one of the gators trying to pinch off an apex a little sooner, hitting the oil pan ever so slightly. Chris got the car off the track to avoid any more damage to the car. It had taken five races to finally bottom out the oil pan pickup to kill Gary Kubo’s “little engine that could” – which the team wasn’t too mad about because it was just so amazing how strong the motor was to have lasted for five consecutive events.

They team took the old motor out of the car and took the already prepared new motor out of the trailer and made the swap. Unfortunately, they had to miss the last session on Saturday, but they were prepared to do battle with the new motor Sunday morning. Chris and the team wanted badly to get into the 1:20’s and beat the Porsche Cup car. So it was crucial that the WORLD Racing Scion tC be in perfect shape for session one on Sunday.

Sunday morning the crew got to the track bright and early to have the car completely ready for the first session. They knew that with the high amount of cars on the track, the team was going to get only one or two laps at best to make it happen. On the first hot lap, Chris pushed a little harder everywhere he could. This extra push allowed Chris to run a 1:30.76. This time was more than a second faster than the day before and almost eight seconds faster than any FWD had ever been at Road Atlanta. By the looks on the faces of drivers, team members, and fans at Road Atlanta, they were boggled. Chris had beaten the Porsche Cup car’s time by almost a tenth of a second.

Chris came in 1st place overall at the Super Street Super Lap Battle, beating out all the AWD and RWD cars, which is a first for the WORLD Racing team. On Saturday, Chris had received 1st place in the NASA TTR Unlimited time trials and was 2nd place on Sunday. Overall, Chris was the second fastest car at the track over the weekend.

Next up on the agenda, Chris and the WORLD Racing team will be at Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia for Redline Time Attack, where they will be going for their fifth consecutive win. The WORLD Racing team is on fire and has no plans of being put out anytime soon! Chris would like to thank his sponsors, fans, friends, and family for their amazing support!

No related posts.

The tC sports coupe, the best-selling vehicle in the Scion lineup, carries over unchanged for the 2009 model year after receiving minor changes last year. The tC Spec Package is discontinued for 2009. The tC remains one of the best values in its segment and has EPA fuel economy estimates of 20 city/27 highway for the manual transmission and 21/29 for the automatic. In addition, the tC is rated ULEV.

Sporty Package
The tC’s sporty package is distinguished by an upper mesh grille, lattice lower grille and projector-type low beam headlights with black trim in front, and tail lights similar in style to the headlights with round combination lamps.

A 2.4-liter double overhead-cam four cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) powers this CARB-certified Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) to produce a punchy 161 horsepower. The tC features a five-speed manual transmission or an available electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission.

The tC features a 106.3-inch wheelbase and 69.1-inch wide stance which facilitates roominess and ride comfort. Four-wheel independent suspension, strut-type front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension add responsive handling.

Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) are standard on the tC. A two-step brake booster increases power assist in proportion to pedal force to provide precise pedal feel. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) helps to prevent the wheels from locking during severe braking maneuvers, while EBD monitors differences in front- and rear-wheel speeds and distributes optimal braking force to all four wheels.

Safety Features
Like all Scions, the tC comes standard with front dual stage airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, tire pressure monitor system, headrests, three-point seatbelts in all five seating positions and a first aid kit. The tC also features a driver’s knee airbag.

Audio System Choices
Scion’s standard 160-watt maximum output Pioneer AM/FM/CD audio system features a head unit with iPod connectivity and control. This head unit integrates track, artist and album information from the iPod into a one-line display on the head unit’s screen. Connectivity is achieved by simply plugging the iPod into a port via a connector cable, providing outstanding sound quality through the car’s stereo system and constant power to the iPod. Music is controlled through the head unit and steering wheel audio controls. A standard mini-jack port also allows users to listen to their portable music collection through the tC’s Pioneer speakers.

The tC’s optional Pioneer premium audio system adds several more features to the standard head unit including the ability to download “skins” to play on the organic electroluminescent (OEL) faceplate. Customers can download images, four-second video clips and eight-second movies from Pioneer’s website. In addition, Pioneer software allows customers to personalize their head unit by burning their own images and movies onto a CD and uploading them onto the available head unit.

Since many Scion customers add in-car entertainment systems to their vehicle, the optional premium audio system comes with head unit outputs in the rear allowing for the addition of external amps to boost power to additional speakers and subwoofers. All head unit features remain unchanged if this feature is used.

Both the standard and premium head units retain key Scion audio system features such as Scion Sound Processing (SSP) where listeners can choose from three pre-set equalizer settings, satellite radio compatibility, a user-customizable welcome screen, MP3 and WMA capability, Automatic Sound Leveling (ASL) and Sound Retouch Technology (SRT), which provides clearer CD sound quality. Both systems will also feature seven speakers: a tweeter and woofer in each door panel, two full range speakers in the rear and the subwoofer under the cargo area.

Scion navigation system is also available featuring a 160-watt maximum power audio/video/navigation unit with seven-inch LCD touch screen.

Comfort and Class
The tC features unexpected utility, detail and content for its class. The comfortable front sport bucket seats feature driver’s side height and thigh support adjustments, along with a walk-in function with memory for both the seat and backrest. For easy access to the rear seats a wide step-in space is available at the push of a convenient lever at the top of the seat back.

The center console’s waterfall design is complemented by shutter-type flush-closing dash vents. In addition, a genuine cast-aluminum temperature control dial flanked by soft-touch electronic buttons, and an LCD display showing exterior temperature, seven fan speeds and a clock are features of the metal-tone center console.

The interior is also accented by a deep orange combination meter on the instrument panel, and silver-colored accents on the door assist grips and center cluster.

Details of the interior were not overlooked as the dash and upper door panels are covered with unique trim that was inspired by the texture of Japanese paper. In addition, the front-passenger airbag is seamlessly integrated into the dash. Dampers are used for the interior moving parts and ensure smooth operation. With the extensive use of sound absorption materials the tC maintains low NVH levels.

The tC’s rear seats deliver utility and comfort. The rear can recline to 45 degrees and can be adjusted into 10 different positions. The 60/40-split rear seats fold forward for a nearly flat cargo floor, and when both are folded flat provide more than 8.5 feet of length for cargo. Standard tie down hooks in the rear seat and cargo areas provide added convenience.

Storage is abundant in the tC with four roomy map pockets, bag hooks in side panels, numerous CD, bottle, cup and cell phone holders, and a two-tiered fabric-covered center console.

Generous Standard Features
All Scion models come well-equipped in a “mono spec” trim. The tC offers full standard equipment so the customer only needs to choose between manual or automatic transmissions and vehicle color.

Standard features include the panorama glass power moonroof (a first in this segment), air conditioning, cruise control, exterior mirrors with integrated turn signal lights, power door locks and mirrors, rear cargo tonneau cover, auto up/down power windows with jam protection, in-key remote keyless entry, rolling-code engine immobilizer security system, auto-off headlamps, electronic hatch release, chrome-plated exhaust tip and a unique audio unit cover.

All Scion models come with complimentary factory-recommended maintenance services for the first 5,000 mile and 10,000 mile intervals, to be performed by an authorized Scion or Toyota dealership.

The tC model is available in a choice of seven colors: Flint Mica, Super White, Black Sand Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Sizzling Crimson Mica, Wave Line Pearl and Nautical Blue Metallic. Exterior colors are complemented by a high-quality dark charcoal fabric interior.

No related posts.

Coming off of two consecutive wins, Chris Rado and the WORLD Racing team were very excited to be heading to Nashville Motor Speedway for another Redline Time Attack event. The Nashville Motor Speedway track is a much shorter and tighter course than Chris is used to, which meant he would be using second and third gear coming out of the turns; this is difficult for the tC because it is such a high-horsepower car. But even with knowing that he was definitely going to have his work cut out for him this weekend, Chris was ready for the challenge and had his aim set on another 1st place finish.

The team arrived in Nashville on Friday, just in time for the HIN Nightshift event at the Nashville Music City Motorplex. The WORLD Racing Scion tC was on display with all the NOS Energy Drink main attractions, and the fans were given a sight of the car that was going to be gunning for 1st place the following morning.

Saturday morning came and the Nashville temperature was up and blazing. The WORLD Racing team waited until the second session to get on the hot track. When Chris got on the track, what he thought to have been his not-so-up-to-par time, ending up being the fastest track time of the day thus far by about a half of a second!

After making some changes to the car in order to get a little more aggressive, Chris went back out on the track for the third session to improve his time. Chris ended the final session with the second highest time of the day – the fastest time was completed by the AWD Top Speed Subaru Impreza, who would turn out to be Chris’s main competition of the weekend.

Going into Sunday, after some changes to the tC and some new tires, Chris went out during the first practice session, to shave a few seconds off his time. He succeeded in this goal when he ran a 1.07.1 – not far behind the 1.05.8 top time of the Top Speed Subaru.

After prepping the tC for the first time attack session that actually counted of the weekend, Chris and the WORLD Racing Scion tC were gridded second behind the Top Speed Subaru. As soon as Chris left the line and pulled second gear, the transmission locked up. So the team pulled the car back into the pit area and saw that they needed to replace the transmission.

“This track was definitely rough on the car,” says Chris. “The transitions on and off the oval were really tough – you come from a high-banked oval onto a flat surface at such a high speed, it really beats up on all the parts of the car.”

Chris and the team worried at first that they might not be able to get back on the track for the next session, especially since the WORLD Racing Scion tC is a unibody car and it usually takes about five hours to do a transmission. “Fortunately, with the experience and level of expertise of the guys on my team,” says Chris, “they were able to get [the transmission] out, changed, replace the axels, and get it all back together in racing shape for the final session.”

Chris and the tC got on the grid for the third session of the day – the second session that actually counted – and was prepared to get himself on the board since he was unable to finish the session prior. Chris was gridded second again behind the Subaru.

“We knew we had to put a good number on the board right away,” says Chris. “And that is just was we did.” Chris laid down a lap time of 1.05.5, which was just a tenth of a second behind the track record for a production body vehicle.

By receiving this time, which was five seconds faster than any other FWD competitor at the event, Chris and the WORLD Racing team were awarded 1st place in the Unlimited FWD Class. They were also 2nd place overall at the event, barely trailing behind the AWD Top Speed Subaru Impreza. And to put the icing on the cake, Chris and the WORLD Racing Scion tC now hold the new track record for the fastest FWD lap time at Nashville Motor Speedway. What a weekend!

This win in Nashville makes three straight 1st place finishes for WORLD Racing, and this is a streak that the team doesn’t plan to let fade anytime soon. Next up on the team’s busy schedule – Road Atlanta, August 8 – 10, for Super Street Super Lap Battle where the WORLD Racing team, Chris Rado, and the WORLD Racing NOS Energy Drink Scion tC will be ready to bring home another victory.

No related posts.

Chris Rado and WORLD Racing were extremely excited going into their first Redline Time Attack event of the season. Chris was especially excited that he was going to be driving on the huge oval track known as California Speedway.

“The team and I were very pumped up to be at this event,” says Chris, “especially coming off a win in Willow Springs last weekend.”

Chris and the WORLD Racing team were confident that they were heading to the track with a solid tC after fixing the little “gremlins” throughout the week. Knowing that Chris would be driving the oval at speeds up to around 170 mph and that a stock Scion tC was never designed to go that fast, the team had to make some modifications to make sure the car would be up for the job. And up for the job it sure was as, four sessions later, the tC left the track in one piece with the top Unlimited FWD time of the weekend.

Going around the oval for the first time, Chris wanted to make sure there were no oiling or engine problems. An oiling problem on the oval could be very dangerous, especially if an engine fails and leads one to drop fluids, this could easily make the tC loose control and at 160 plus mph, it could be really bad.

Chris went into the first session trying to get a good feel for the track and get comfortable in his machine. In this session, Chris ran a 1.53, a very respectable time, and also the 7th best time of the first session out of about 200 cars.

The WORLD Racing team still needed to make some changes as they had not pushed the tC nearly as hard as they knew they could. “I’d rather be cautious at first when we are at a new track,” says Chris. “I don’t want to push the car too hard right away and stuff it into the wall. I’d much rather creep up on the competition.”

After some suspension changes, Chris went out on the track for the second session. He ran all 1.51′s on this session – an improvement from his first session time. Chris had started to become more comfortable with the track and understand better where the braking points were.

After the second session, Chris’s time had advanced him to the fastest FWD spot. Unfortunately, Chris still had not had the chance to push the tC as hard as he wanted to due to him pulling the car out of the session early because of a broken axel. The after-market axels that hadn’t worked out so well were replaced with factory Toyota ones which WORLD Racing had used for the last season and a half. The team was pumped and ready for the remaining sessions the following day.

On Sunday, Chris and the WORLD Racing team decided to strategically utilize only the first practice session. This way they could use the time of the second session to make any necessary changes and completely verify that the engine was in tip-top shape.

“We wanted to make sure that our package was completely sound going into these last two rounds because we knew we were going to start to lean on the car,” says Chris. “We were going to push the horsepower limits, we were going to be running almost thirty-five pounds of boost, and we were going to be putting a ton of pressure on this car, so everything had to be right.”

Apparently this extra attention to detail worked out for the team, as their time for the first session of the day plummeted compared to their times from the day before. Chris had run a 1.47.3 which put him in the 5th place position, not even a tenth of a second behind Billy Johnson in the M-Workz 350Z.

The team was very excited because they knew they could still push the tC even more for the next session. “No one dreamed a front-wheel-drive would go faster than a minute fifty, and we broke that barrier by three seconds,” says Chris. “And I knew I could pick up another two or three in the next session, especially with some of the changes we would be making.”

One of the changes the WORLD Racing team would be making was to their tires. Thanks to the guys at Hankook Tires, the tC was dressed with their Hankook C91s, which according to Chris “are probably the best time attack tire out there on the market – and we were going to get the chance to run them.”

With the Scion tC being FWD, the team could use any traction advantage possible. This is why Chris and the team were so stoked to have been offered the chance to rock a pair of Hankook C91s. With the help of Paul from Hankook, the team mounted up the tires and got the car back in the staging lanes and ready for the forth session. Chris felt extremely confident that with these tires and with his high comfort level of the track, he would easily shave a few seconds off his time.

During the warm-up lap, Chris was very excited about the possibilities. The car felt amazing with its new tires; Chris could tell a big difference between the Hankooks and the tires he was running with earlier. “The Hankook’s felt like I had crazy glue on all four tires!” says Chris.

Chris had just finished the practice lap and was coming up to the straightaway and the green flag to start the hot lap. He stabbed the scramble boost button on the steering wheel to take off on the straight and unfortunately, the tC blew a boost hose. For the WORLD Racing team, the weekend and the last session had been cut short, but on a brighter side, they still managed to receive top honors in the Unlimited FWD class by almost six seconds and were 5th place overall.

“My team was amazing this weekend and was extremely excited about how we placed,” says Chris, “But as a driver, I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get the chance to push it in that last session, because I really wanted to see what the WORLD Racing Scion tC could do, especially with it’s new Hankooks.”

Thanks to their drag racing experience, the WORLD Racing team has already taken all necessary provisions and utilized their knowledge to make sure what minor failures occurred over the weekend, will in no way happen again. Chris and the team are extremely excited for next weekend where they will be invading Nashville Speedway, another big NASCAR oval, for Redline Time Attack again. This time, Chris intends to let nothing stop him from pushing the WORLD Racing NOS Energy Drink Scion tC to it’s full capability in order to achieve not only a best FWD time, but a best time overall.

No related posts.

Over the weekend, Chris Rado and WORLD Racing traveled to Willow Springs International Raceway for Super Lap Battle. Chris and the WORLD Racing Scion tC always compete in the Unlimited FWD class, but Chris likes to think that they are actually competing with all the classes for the best time of the weekend. “Competing with RWD and AWD cars with extremely talented drivers is very challenging,” says Chris, “and that’s exactly what we are in the business for.”

The WORLD Racing team came to the event very confident, as they had just tested the time attack Scion tC the previous weekend at Willow Springs. The team had to be on the track at 8:25 AM Sunday morning after leaving Las Vegas at 11 PM the night prior for Battle of the Imports, so saying the crew was a little tired would be an understatement.

During the first driving session, which was practice, Chris was only able to run one lap due to a bust in the intercooler piping.

The WORLD Racing team was prepared to go out for the second race session, which according to Chris, was the best session of the day because the track has only a little bit of heat and most likely no one has dropped any fluids on the tack yet. Unfortunately for Chris and the team, they popped a boost hose again and it cut their second session short as well.

During the third session, Chris took taking Melissa of NOS Energy Drink for a ride-along, which Chris has never done before in the time attack tC. Adding a passenger to the vehicle always changes the dynamics of the vehicle no matter their size. During the session, the car started misfiring a bit, so Chris brought it in early to check it out. But he had managed a 1.29 which was extremely respectable because no other FWD car had performed a time like that all day, and Chris did it with a passenger.

Once the team got the car back to the pit, they realized that they had a blown fuel pressure regulator and actually had gone lean three times. After this was fixed, Chris went out for the final session, again with Melissa in the car. By this session, the track was completely cooked. You could definitely say it was the worst time for a car to be on the track.

Chris went out for four final laps and managed to pull a 1.27.55, which was two-tenths off Chris’s track record of the best Unlimited FWD lap time. Chris came in 1st place in the Unlimited FWD class and in 3rd place overall..

“It was a great weekend,” says Chris. “We were very pleased to have gotten where we were even with having a passenger in the car. Next time we’re out at Willow Springs, people better watch out because we will definitely be running faster than a one-point-two-seven.”

During the two days prior to Super Lap Battle, Chris and the WORLD Racing team were at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the fifth Battle of the Imports event of the season. Coming to this event in Las Vegas two weeks after the BOTI event at humid Budd’s Creek, Maryland, the WORLD Racing team had to accommodate for the climate changes in the PRO FWD Scion tC before sending it out for it’s first qualifying pass on Friday night.

On the first run, the car bogged a little and Chris put down an 8.13 at about 188 MPH. Not a typical pass from the WORLD Racing crew, but at least the tC came out of the pass unscathed.

For the final round of qualifying on Saturday, the car shook the tires hard off the line. Chris still managed to put down a 7.64 at 188 MPH. This time would award him the 1st place qualifying spot.

For the first round of eliminations, Chris went up against Ed Bergenholtz. The lights came down the tree and the tires shook the car worse than ever. When Chris clicked into second gear, the passenger side steering knuckle broke and Chris headed hard left straight towards the wall. Once the steering knuckle had broken, the passenger side wheel was pointing in and steering the car itself, which was not good for Chris one bit. “I just kept steering and managed to keep the car off the wall somehow.”

Bergenholtz was having some problems of his own at the line, but after seeing Chris’s dilemma, he hit the gas a little more and passed Chris 100 feet before the finish line.

Chris and WORLD Racing were pleased to have placed 2nd and to have been the number one qualifier of the weekend at Battle of the Imports. Chris would like to thank his sponsors, fans, friends, and family for their support.

No related posts.
