Toyota emerged as the best selling automotive brand in the U.S. in 2008 for the first time in history. Meanwhile, sales of new vehicles dropped to their lowest level since the early 1980s in December as carmakers finished up a terrible fourth quarter even as they used heavy incentives to move vehicles off dealer lots.

Toyota finished the year with sales of 1,957,575 vehicles, while General Motors Chevrolet sold 1,801,131 vehicles to American customers last year. Toyota nosed out Chevrolet even after the 113,904 vehicles sold under the Scion name plate were subtracted from the Japanese automaker’s totals. Chevrolet and Ford had been the best selling nameplates for the past century.

For the full-year, car sales, which were estimated at 13.5 million units, also finished the year down 17 percent and at the lowest ebb since 1992. The Ford F-150 pickup truck, however, was the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for the 27th year in a row. It was also the 32nd year in a row that the F-Series was the best selling truck in the U.S.

“Our thanks go out to our customers, our dealers and, of course, the Ford employees and supplier partners who design, engineer and manufacture quality, fuel-efficient trucks delivering unmatched capability,’ said Jim Farley, Ford’s group vice president, marketing and communications.

George Pipas, sales analyst for the Ford Motor Co., estimated that passenger cars outsold trucks, sport utility vehicles and minivans for the first time since 2000, reversing more than three decades of decline in the popularity of traditional passenger cars.

Truck sales appeared to make a very modest comeback during the fourth quarter at least in part because fuel prices had dropped and truck buyers had better access to credit than buyers of more fuel-efficient vehicles. However, Pipas also said the shift to passenger cars appeared very well established.

The sudden drop in sales during the second half of 2008 also left every carmaker selling vehicles in the U.S., with the exception of Subaru, reporting a drop of sales for the full year.

Two of the biggest and most painful declines in 2008 were recorded by GM and Chrysler.

GM reported a 35 percent sales drop in December and a 27.5 percent decline for the year, while Chrysler sales fell 53 percent in December and by 30 percent for the year. Ford saw its sales decline by 32 percent in December and by 20 percent for the year. Toyota’s sales dropped 37.5 percent in December despite an advertising and incentive blitz and 15 .7 percent for the year.

Honda also reported a 34.7 percent decline in December but a modest 8.2 percent decrease for the year, while Nissan’s sales fell 30 percent in December and by 11 percent for the full year.

In tough economy, smart USA exceeds sales goals

In a very tough year for carmakers, Bloomfield Hills-based smart USA exceeded its sales targets. For December, smart USA, which is a partnership between Daimler AG and Penske Automotive Group of Bloomfield Hills, recorded 2,341 sales. With year-to-date sales for 2008 at 24,622 units, smart USA surged past its sales objectives in its first year of business in the U.S. market. The total sales exceeded smart USA’s original projection of 20,000 units during what proved to be the auto industry’s worst year since 1992. The strong sales of smart USA also helped Daimler mitigate the drop in sales at Mercedes-Benz USA, which had dropped 11.7 percent. Overall, car sales dropped 35 percent during December and by 17 percent for 2008.

Daimler officials also said the smart for-two offers a combination of outstanding fuel efficiency, innovative safety features, environmental friendliness and excellent value. The smart for-two, finetuned by BRABUS, a specialist in tuning Mercedes vehicles, will go on sale in the United States later this month. There are currently 74 smart centers open in 35 states. Daimler also plans to show off an all-electric version of the smart car during the North American International Auto Show next week in Detroit.

What if you’re interested in a new or recently redesigned car model like the 2008 Cadillac STS, Honda Accord, Mercedes C-Class, Nissan Rogue, Saturn VUE, or Scion xB? Should you follow the conventional wisdom that a new car design should be avoided in its first year, and wait for the 2009? Or should you take a chance so you can own the new design while it’s still new?

In the past these have been your only alternatives, because no one has provided reliability information on new car designs soon enough, or updated this information more than once a year. But now there’s a third, better alternative in a growing number of cases: wait a few months for TrueDelta’s Vehicle Reliability Survey (VRS) results to update. “With prompt quarterly updates, TrueDelta’s Vehicle Reliability Survey is making it possible to buy a new design while it’s still new, without gambling that the manufacturer found and fixed bugs during development,” says Michael Karesh, developer of TrueDelta.com.

The latest results, released today, cover owner experiences through March 31, 2008. This is actually the third update to include some results for 2008 models. The next update, in August, will include at least one early 2009.

Some new designs prove solid:
TrueDelta reported back in February that the 2008 Honda Accord had required few repairs, and this continues to be the case. Additional owner data from the first quarter confirms February’s preliminary finding that the Nissan Rogue has had a cleaner launch than other recent Nissan designs, and has required few repairs. The new C-Class appears to be more solid than Mercedes’ recent reputation would suggest, and has a slightly better than average repair rate.

Last February, a preliminary result for the 2008 Scion xB suggested that owners might be experiencing more than the average number of problems, especially with exterior trim. But the updated result, based on additional data, finds that these problems were limited to a few early cars. The second generation xB’s repair rate is now better than average. With TrueDelta’s quarterly updates, people interested in the new xB had to wait only three months to learn that the initially high repair rate did not apply to more recently produced cars.

Redesigned GM models don’t fare so well:
A preliminary result for the 2008 Cadillac CTS three months ago suggested a high repair rate. The updated result, based on nearly three times as much data, indicates an even higher repair rate–the highest for any of the 122 results in the latest update, and about two-and-a-half times the average. “Most reported problems involve wind noise, interior trim fits, and driveline vibrations,” reports Karesh. “TrueDelta’s result actually under-represents the number of problems owners are experiencing, since our analysis includes only successfully completed repairs and some of the vibration issues are proving hard to eliminate.”

The 2008 CTS is not the only new GM design to require more than the average number of repairs. The latest update indicates a moderately high repair rate for the 2008 Saturn VUE, about one-and-a-half times the average. And last year TrueDelta reported similarly high repair rates for the 2007 GMC Acadia, 2007 Saturn Aura, and 2007 Saturn Outlook.

GM vehicles often fare better in their second model year. As reported three months ago for the Acadia and Outlook, the 2008 versions of GM’s large crossovers have about half the repair rate of the 2007s. The 2008 Aura also seems to have a much lower repair rate than the 2007, based on a preliminary result.

“GM isn’t the only manufacturer to identify and fix problems during the first model year rather than prior to launch,” says Karesh. As TrueDelta reported before others, even the 2007 Toyota Camry V6 had transmission problems early on, and the 2006 Honda Civic initially suffered from water leaks and warped interior trim. “But,” Karesh continues, “for GM rough launches appear to be the rule rather than the exception.”

How quickly will GM address problems with the 2008 Cadillac CTS and Saturn VUE? With its prompt quarterly updates, TrueDelta will answer this question before any other source of vehicle reliability information. The next update is never more than three months away.

About TrueDelta.com
One of themost innovative automotive websites in operation today, TrueDelta has repeatedly identified ways the Internet can be leveraged to better serve the information needs of car buyers and car owners. Car owners join TrueDelta as “panel members” and provide TrueDelta’s data through brief online surveys. In exchange for their participation, these owners receive full access to TrueDelta’s quarterly results free of charge.

Through rapid growth, the number of vehicles in TrueDelta’s panel will reach 30,000 in June. This growth is due in part to enthusiastic support from owner forums such as DriveAccord.net, NICOClub.com, SaturnFans.com, EnclaveForum.net, and CadillacForums.com. These forums were essential in quickly building a viable sample of 2008 model owners.

Car owners can view the latest VRS results and become involved at TrueDelta.com.

Obike, a member of YourSciontC.com, will be participating in the 2008 One Lap of America with his 2005 Scion tC and will be providing updates from the road. The One Lap of America is a motorsports event in the United States since 1984. It is the successor to the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, an underground auto race of the 1970s. The premise for both is to drive cross-country, but the One Lap of America respects speed limits. Obike will be updating his blog, which will automatically be fed to the YourSciontC.com forums, open for discussion!

Competition occurs as time trials held at various race tracks around the country. The competitors drive from race track to race track, (often driving 24 hours at a time) without the benefit of support crews. The field of competitors is divided into several classes based primarily on original manufacturers suggested retail prices and number of doors. Competitors may make any modifications to their vehicles as they see fit but must run on a single set of tires throughout the entire event. Race track events are time trials with up to eight cars on track at a time. Competition is for fastest time rather than wheel-to-wheel racing.

The first One Lap in 1984 circumnavigated the lower forty-eight United States with the scoring based on comparing the entrants’ declared mileage with that of the organizer’s (“guess Brock’s mileage”). From 1985 through 1991 competition was a series of Road Rallies: time speed distance events conducted on public roads. The length of the One Lap of America has been as long as 10,000 miles (16,000 km) over ten days (1989) to just under 4,000 miles (6,400 km) over six days.

The One Lap of America has attracted such famous drivers as Parnelli Jones, Price Cobb, Brian Makse, John Buffum, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, and Hurley Haywood.

The One Lap of America is a charity race that spans 4,000mi in seven days. It is an endurance race for not just the vehicle, but the drivers as well. The primary appeal of the OLoA is that the vehicle must not only race on tracks, but be driven between each event. This year the event runs from Indiana, to Wisconsin, to Iowa, to Texas, to Louisiana, to South Carolina, to Virginia, to Pennsylvania, and finally back to Indiana. All of this in a heavily modified 2005 Scion tC.

Last, and DEFINITELY not least, is to notify everyone that the charity we have chosen is Child’s Play, a non-profit organization specializing in the donation of books, cash, games, and toys to children’s hospitals all over the world. Because of this, we ask all of you to please donate. Since this is an endurance race, we ask that everyone donates a certain amount for each mile completed of the event as well as each track completed. A suggested payment scheme is as follows:

1-5¢ for each mile driven while still being qualified.

$1-5 for each track event completed.

$5 bonus for each top five finish.

$25 bonus for a top ten finish overall.

Other Pro drivers include NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Champion Mike Skinner, NHRA Funny Car Champion Tony Pedregon, two-time NHRA U.S. Nationals Funny Car winner Whit Bazemore, and Grand-Am race car driver/fine jewelry designer Sarena Traver (who garnered a spot by bidding $80,000 in the Boys and Girls charity auction).
The Southern California Toyota Dealer seat is being filled by Bud Gordon, General Manager of Quality Toyota of Corona. Rounding out the field is the second Boys and Girls Club charity auction winner Craig Barto, whose matching $80,000 donation also earned him a chance to challenge the celebrities and pros in this year’s race.

“We’re looking forward to one of the most competitive races since we created the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race more than 30 years ago,” said Les Unger, Toyota’s national motorsports manager. “The Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race is renowned for attracting ‘the fast and the famous’ because it offers the unparalleled celebrity-pro challenge of real high-speed racing, combined with a chance to support a worthwhile charity.”

Toyota will donate $5,000 to “Racing for Kids” in the name of each celebrity racer, and another $5,000 to the winning racer’s charity of choice. Racing for Kids is a non-profit program benefiting children’s hospitals in Long Beach and Orange County, Calif.

Finally, a $15,000 donation is made in conjunction with the 11th annual “PEOPLE Pole Award.” Sponsored by PEOPLE magazine, the award honors the pole-position winner of the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race qualifying session on Friday, April 18. On behalf of the race and its participants, Toyota has donated close to $1.6 million to various children’s organizations since 1991.
