TRD’s Street-Legal Supercharger for Scion xB

Toyota Racing Development has introduced a street-legal, fully warranted supercharger system for the 5.7-liter V8 in the Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Tundra. The hardware boosts output to 504 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, an increase of 25 percent. This unit supplements recently introduced supercharger systems for the Scion tC, Scion xB and Toyota Tacoma.

The new TRD 5.7-liter 3UR Supercharger System features the same Roots-type Eaton four-lobe supercharger recently introduced by the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V and the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Boost peaks at 8.5 psi and the output has been certified according to SAE test procedures at 504 hp at 5,500 rpm and 550 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The system is emissions-legal in all 50 states. When it’s installed by a Toyota dealer, the package carries either a 12-month warranty regardless of mileage or the balance of a new-car five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, whichever is greater. The $5,875 kit includes a water-to-air intercooler and requires 8-10 hours of installation time.

This new package supplements TRD’s Roots-type Eaton supercharger for the 4.0-liter V6 of the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota FJ Cruiser, which increases output to 304 hp. TRD also markets a centrifugal supercharger for the 2.4-liter inline-4 engine of the Scion tC and Scion xB that boosts power to 200 hp. Both these packages are also emissions-legal in all 50 states and carry a 12-month warranty.

Although TRD is just about to observe its 30th anniversary in the U.S., the parts-and-accessories division has only begun to achieve significant sales success since it came under the direction of Toyota’s U.S. car operation in April 2005. Now TRD ranks 4th in the sales volume of high-performance parts behind GM Performance Parts, Ford Racing and Mopar.

Frank Bonnet, the chief administrator of TRD’s accessory department, notes, “The close connection with Toyota in the U.S. got us early access to new cars so we can engineer to Toyota’s standards and do things like test for durability and corrosion resistance in our anti-sway bars.” He also adds, “Our strengths are really Toyota’s strengths — parts availability from Toyota dealers, street-legal air emissions and a full warranty.”

What this means to you: TRD has quietly made Toyota a force in high-performance parts in the last few years, although the company is still only a third of the size of its Detroit rivals.
