Scion xB added to Top Safety Picks

The list of cars the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has singled out for their crash test performance continues to grow.

The IIHS announced today 11 additions to its list of “Top Safety Picks,” which now includes 62 new cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans.

Newly added are the Ford Flex and Honda Pilot crossover SUVs; the Scion xB and the Volkswagen Jetta/Rabbit economy cars; the Lincoln MKS luxury sedan; the Toyota Tacoma pickup; the Volkswagen Eos convertible, the Volkswagen Passat family sedan; and some versions of the Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer economy cars.

Cars that the IIHS judges to be Top Safety Picks have earned the organization’s top rating of “Good” in frontal, side, and rear-end crash tests, and come with electronic stability control, which uses a car’s antilock brakes to prevent skids.

But what’s more interesting than the cars that earned the Top Safety Pick are those that did not. The list of cars that fell short of the IIHS’s requirements includes many luxury-brand vehicles, including BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes, and Volvos, as well as top sellers like the Chevrolet Impala and Toyota Camry.

Don’t count on a high price tag or a strong reputation to provide you with the strongest safety. Read up on the IIHS ratings – and the ratings from NHTSA, the federal agency that rates cars in slightly different crashes on a scale of one to five stars – before expecting that you’re getting the safest car you can.
