2009 Scion tC
What It Is: The new Scion tC is an attractive sport coupe with an impressive price tag. The 3-door liftback I drove came with some add-ons, but was still remarkably low in price, without lacking any conveniences. It can seat up to five and the rear seats fold down to allow for extra cargo space when needed.
Under the hood: A 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder, 161 horsepower engine is standard on all tCs. You can get a 4-speed automatic or keep the standard 5-speed manual with overdrive. I found the car surprisingly peppy.
Cup holders: Two in the front center console and two side cup holders for rear passengers.
Upside: Well, I really found numerous upsides to this car. It is attractive, sporty, fun and comfortable to drive. And let’s not forget the easy-to-swallow sticker price. Scions target the late teen to early 30s group, although they seem to appeal to a broad range of drivers. The tC comes standard with a panoramic moonroof, sport front bucket seats with adjustable headrests, driver’s seat adjustments for height and seat bottom angles, a 160-watt Pioneer AM/FM CD system with seven speakers and a 35-watt subwoofer, iPod connector and auxiliary audio jack, power windows and door locks, auto-off headlamps, cruise control and more. Did I mention it was fun?
Downside: The acceleration was a little jumpy, but that was not a problem. For me, the only downside was that I’m pretty sure my daughter had tears in her eyes when I told her that we couldn’t keep it.
Mileage: 21 city and 29 highway miles per gallon.
Government Safety Ratings: Not yet rated by the NHTSA.
Cost: $17,800 for the base automatic, with a total price of 21,445 with the added all-weather carpet mats, rear spoiler lip, security system, and navigation system with tilt-out CD and DVD access.
