We know that Scion will launch a new tC coupe and a tiny little iQ minicar before the end of the year, but what comes after that? Yoshi Inaba, president of Toyota Motor North America, admits that the Japanese automaker hasn’t yet decided what future products make the most sense for the youth-oriented Scion brand, but Scion General Manager Jack Hollis tells Wards Auto that a truck is a possibility.

Take a look at the current pickup truck market and you’ll see that the only currently available machine that even remotely fits into the compact role is the Ford Ranger, which hasn’t been updated in eons and sees its sales dwindle every single year (55,600 in 2009). This being the case, there may be room for a small urban pickup from Scion, though the automaker indicates it would need to be careful not to infringe on the class-leading Toyota Tacoma.

If Scion did indeed build a true compact pickup with an eye toward reasonable fuel efficiency, what would it look like? Perhaps an xB with a small bed? Or might it look something like the Hako concept from the 2008 New York Auto Show (perhaps in modified form)?

What’s a Scion tD? Allow us to explain. Scion is on the press conference schedule for the 2009 New York Auto Show. And with the way things are going in the industry these days, even Toyota isn’t going to pay up to have a press conference for the xB 11.0 Special Edition.

No, a full blown press conference is more likely reserved for an all-new model. But which one?

Well, current Scion VP Jack Hollis told Automotive News last month, “Within the next two years, we will have a replacement tC” coupe.

The time frame seems a little long, but we went digging anyways. The U.S. Patent and Trademark website makes things easy, and when you’re looking for the next-generation tC it doesn’t take much imagination to figure out where Scion might be going with the naming convention.

Sure enough, we found a Toyota trademark for the name “tD”. Does it guarantee that’s the name? Nope. Does it sound considerably more marketable than tB? Yep.

The only question left now is what kind of coupe it’ll be. Let’s hope it takes after the Fuse, and not the Hako.

It’s been widely reported over the last year that Scion is planning to add a fourth model to its lineup, but there’s still considerable debate about what form it could take. According to Scion veep Jack Hollis, Toyota’s entry-level automaker hasn’t taken anything off the table, but believes “there are a lot of opportunities for a [second] coupe” to join the aging tC.

Unfortunately, Scion’s been resting its laurels on its lone coupe for some time, and the current model will remain in production until the redesign arrives in 2011. That’s an achingly long time in the automotive world, particularly considering the three- to four-year model cycle most automakers adhere to. And with rumors circulating that the Toyota/Subaru rear-wheel-drive coupe has been shelved, we’re a bit skeptical that a performance model is still in the near-term cards.

So what’s Scion considering? Hollis told Automotive News, “We think there is room for a bigger sedan and smaller vehicles. We think there is even the possibility for a truck-based vehicle with an open bed.” The idea of bringing the Toyota iQ to the States has been floated before, as well as a production version of the Toyota A-Bat. If Scion really wanted to shake things up, it could produce a compact version of the Hako Coupe with an open bed (rendered poorly above) to kill two (or three) birds with one stone.

Controversy around the Scion Hako concept car is still rousing more hype about this masterpiece vehicle. Scion revealed the Scion Hako coupe concept at the 2008 New York international auto show stoking the debate on if it was a lovable automobile. The Hako Coupe Concept was generic inception of xB and the emergence of American vintage style among young Tokyo trendsetters. The little machine is for the affluent youth, dynamic and seeking iconic lifestyle in the smooth streets based on the correlation of Japanese and American cultures. To catch up with the sensational Scion, Tesla Motors released stylish Tesla Roadster which has cues of Ferrari and Lamborghini and blasts to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and one of the buyers is Matt Damon.

The Scion might just make such an appeal like the high priced Maybach 62 or this Matt Damon electric speed Roadster which has an international record for being smart for two people. Another sensational high speed and affluent American youth speed car smart for two is the Chrysler’s Jeep renegade and scion is a replica of the comfort and record features. The Renegade comes with an electric motor powering each axle, the Jeep Renegade concept is just like the scion Hako, smart and fast but not very beautiful.

No related posts.

Congratulations to reader and USPS aficionado suzq044, for the commentariat have dubbed you the winner of the Scion Hako Redesign competition. We were pulling for the Hakominos and earlier the paper-and-tape Rothified Hako, but saying so may have steered voting so we decided not to. We have to say the entries were most impressive, ranging from incredible technical prowess to displays of absolute comic genius. To claim your prize suzq044, send an email to me and we’ll get those sweet, sweet Scion hats in the mail tout de suite. It’s put the front in the back, and the back in the front. When I was studying animal behavior in college my teacher cited an interesting experiment where a silhouette of a bird was shown to goslings. When shown flying in one direction with the longer portion ahead of the wings (looking like a goose), the animals didn’t react. But when shown flying in the same direction with the smallest section ahead of the wings (looking like a hawk) the animals reacted to the threat.

This applies directly to the Hako. If we do some reengineering and make the back into the front…voila! A cool new COE concept truck from Scion. Hawks are much cooler than geese after all.

This is a quick reworking of the Hako. I dub it the Okah Truck (not to be
confused with the Japanese Ohka flying bomb of WWII). I’ve added a pickup bed and rearranged the door handles. This crew cab has a forward-opening hatch front. The rear bulkhead has pass-through capabilities. The bed is covered by a contrasting hard tonneau. Ideally, the windshield would need to dive deeper into the fascia for better forward vision. Of course, a regular cab would allow a longer bed and more outward utility.

I’m a big fan of the cab-over aesthetic best expressed by the Dodge A100, Ford Econoline, Chevy Rampside, Jeep FC series, and VW pickup here in the U.S. and the M-B Unimog throughout the world. In this configuration, the Okah Truck has all the cool attitude the New Microbus had, with which VW taunted us a few years ago.

C’mon, Scion, bring us a truck. And keep those wheels. They are cool.

To say the Scion Hako Concept went over poorly with the Jalopnik staff would be something of an understatement. Every time we checked the front page we’d recoil in horror as the Hako scrolled past on the screen. It became the generic stake by which other cars were measured. “At least it’s not the Hako” was heard more than once. Now, considering the depth of photochopping skill we see <del>from Chrysler</del> here on a daily basis, we’re betting you guys can do better than the awkward and boxy “American vintage style” Scion touted at the New York Auto Show.

Instead of being only a contest for Photoshop whiz kids, for this one, we’ll be giving bonus points to those who use the crudest software drawing package. If you send us a design using ASCII, you’ve got a better chance at winning than the guy using MSPaint who has a leg up on the guy using Photoshop. This is not to say the people using P-Shop can’t win. Perhaps he or she uses a design completely consisting of a mosaic of kittens duplicated with the stamp tool. Be creative, be inventive, be original, and use curves, heavens knows Scion didn’t. Send us your submissions via a post on this thread, or directly to myself at the address (ben@jalopnik.com) on the sidebar by Wednesday of next week. We’ll cull the initial entries and let you all vote on the winner, then that lucky artist will see both of those sweet Scion hats arriving by mail for the efforts. Good luck, and may the best crappiest design win.

Scion is known for trying to be hip with the kids, but I have a feeling its latest concept, the Hako, is a couple steps too far, even for the spikey haired, angsty kids of America. Hako means box and this is very boxy, even more boxy than the xB. If you remember, Scion originally teased the Hako Coupe concept two weeks ago, but here she is in all of her ugly glory. Original speculation suggested that this could take the place of the xA, but something tells me that wouldn’t fly too well.

The Hako Coupe was designed by Scion’s Tokyo design division and it was supposedly inspired by the emergence of American vintage style among young Japanese trendsetters. If this is American vintage, then I don’t know if I want to be American. I’m sorry, Scion, this is a bit much. Oh and if you are wondering, on the rear, the right circle on the lower side is the exhaust, and the matching one on the left is the reverse light. Yes, very strange.

This inside of the Hako Coupe is a bit more valid than the exterior. The inside is chock full of futuristic doodads including a trackball-like interface on the steering wheel. The passenger side has two LCD displays where media can be controlled. The backseat of the Hako also includes screens that are connected to video cameras placed on the outside of the Hako. Let the YouTube hoonage commence.
