Scion ended the first media day at the 2008 New York Auto by unveiling their stunning Hako Coupe Concept. The low slung coupe’s silhouette nods to the brands original boxy Xb that has since been smoothed out. The Hako has tons of techno-gadgetry built in including small round exterior cameras that allow the passenger to take travel photos from inside the vehicle and email them to friends or post them online. The idea is to allow owners to create their own digital travel log.

March 19, 2008 - New York - Scion unveiled its Hako Coupe Concept vehicle at a press conference today at the New York International Auto Show.

Scion’s Hako Coupe was developed by Tokyo Design Division, which studied global, youth-inspired trends. Japanese and American youth cultures often influence each other and are interpreted with a unique twist. The Hako Coupe Concept was inspired by the iconic xB and the emergence of American vintage style among young Tokyo trendsetters.

“Scion’s Hako Coupe Concept embodies a distinct global perspective on today’s youth,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. “This type of forward thinking complements the Scion philosophy of intently listening to our customers and being willing to take risks to help us see where our brand should be. We took the xB’s iconic boxy shape and explored something more vivacious, yet just as emotionally appealing. This concept is the sporty version of a box.”

The Scion press room was surrounded with security but the awkward prize, the new Scion Hako (aka Scion tC replacement), was waiting within. Farago deftly distracts the first guard with the old “Excuse me ma’am but have you seen my puppy” trick while I used my mistakingly printed manufacturer’s pass to sneak past the second one. We were able to get on stage and snap a few pics before a security official put his chest into my camera. More coming soon.

Scion will use this month’s New York auto show to unveil a coupe concept, named Hako.

The Hako is a “sport interpretation of the box concept,” Scion said on Wedneday in a press release. It released a photo of a small corner of the vehicle. The concept was developed by Toyota’s design studios in Tokyo.

If you’ve been on practically any Scion forum within the past couple years, you’ve probably heard about and seen pictures of the Scion concept Fuse. In any event, it was unveiled officially at the 2008 New York Auto Show. This adds more weight to this being a replacement for the Scion tC some time down the line…
